Steven Rassmussen
My practice is grounded in the belief that meaningful design begins with a deep understanding of place, ecology, and human experience. Holding Master’s degrees in both Architecture and Urban Planning, as well as Bachelor’s degrees in Architecture and Philosophy, I approach design as a problem involving spatial form, urban systems, ecological impact, and critical inquiry. Philosophy provides the groundwork for interrogating assumptions and mapping complex problems, while architecture and urban planning offer the tools to synthesize those insights into functional, context-driven solutions.
My scholarly and professional interests focus on human spatial preferences that developed and evolved alongside our own evolutionary path. Illuminating the stark disconnect we’re experiencing today with our own environment and its impact on well-being as highlighted by my Master’s thesis on architectural bioimmunology. I thrive in fluid, unpredictable environments, utilizing an iterative process to develop adaptable, location specific solutions rather than applying rigid frameworks. Influenced by foundational texts such as A Pattern Language, Cognitive Architecture, and Thinking, Fast and Slow, my work views built space as a living system, balancing cognitive principles with environmental responsiveness to create enduring design outcomes.
